Favourite Discipline: Any really, I enjoy leading best, but I do enjoy singles since I’ve played on the Short Mat Players tour. Influenced by: Lots of players over the years but probably Chris Page, he was so encouraging towards me when I started playing Short Mat and still is today. Achievements: ESMBA Fours Runners-up is the stand out one. I have won all Four Major County Titles, Honoured to have been Captain of County Premier Team and I’m proud of my work as Competition Secretary. Ambition: To win a National Title & own an England shirt. Outside interests: Classic Rock music, Portsmouth FC and coarse fishing.
Name: KATHY BENNETT – Club: Southwater BC, Social member at Comptons. Bowls Used: Drakes Pride Professionals. Year Started Bowling: Approximately 2003 I think. Favourite Discipline: Pairs and Triples. Influenced by: To many good players I’ve watched to comment here. Achievements: Winning in the plate at Southwater not long after starting bowling. Winning the main competition, a couple of times, and a few other comps at Southwater. Playing in the premier team. Ambition: Carry on playing and enjoying the game. Outside interests: Walking my dog Maisie, boating on the Norfolk Broads, playing bridge, gardening and swimming.
Name: AUDREY BULL – Club: Southbourne SMBC. Bowls Used: Vectors size 2. Favourite Discipline: I like all disciplines but singles is my least enjoyable. Influence: My two sons who both play. Achievements: Plenty of county runners up, qualifying for the nationals and I enjoy playing in the ICC Ambitions: At my age it’s just to keep playing for as long as possible. Outside Interests: Bingo, jigsaws and Charity shops.
Name: DAN BUTLER – Club: Comptons SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Ace. Year Started Bowling: 2013 Favourite Discipline: Singles- a good way to practice your drawing and play your own game. Fours- with the right teammates, probably the most enjoyable format. Influenced by: Having bowled with them for almost 7 years, I have learnt a lot from my clubmates Russell Stallibrass and Seton & Bryony Wood. Since playing ICC, Ive also been inspired by some of the top players in West Sussex- the likes of Jack Rollings, Robin Armstrong, Marc Lancaster and Chris Page to name a few. Achievements: Comptons Singles, County Mixed Pairs, County Charity Fours, County Champion of Champions. Ambition: Having qualified for my first National finals this season, Im looking forward to competing in Melton Mowbray, but most importantly to keep enjoying my bowls and keep improving! Outside interests: Trainee chartered accountant. Fair-weather outdoor bowler for Petworth BC. Supporting Horsham FC with the Lardy Army. Not necessarily in that order.
Name: MONICA ENTICKNAP – Club: The Martlets SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Ace YOMP size 0. Year Started Bowling: 2013. Favourite Discipline: Probably Triples or Fours. Influenced by: I started bowling at Wisborough Green under the guidance of Reg Hickman, until then I had never done anything sporty. Nowadays I look up to the guys at Martlets and not just because they’re taller than me. Achievements: Several trophies at Wisborough Green, including the Singles in 2018, I won all four club competitions that year, also a Mixed Fours trophy at a Warman Leisure Tournament. Also, a couple of Plate wins in the Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours at County level. Ambition: I would love to win something at Martlets and hopefully a County competition or two. Outside interests: Mainly family, also cooking, baking and walking.
Name: BARRIE FITCH – Club: The Martlets SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Elite’s Size 4 Heavy. Year Started Bowling: Started somewhere around the early 90’s can’t remember exactly when. Favourite Discipline: My favourite discipline nowadays is Rinks (especially Lead) but I have enjoyed playing in all of them. Influenced by: I’ve been most influenced by my fellow Martlets (Previously Foxes) members – I think anyone can learn a lot from them. Achievements: Played in all disciplines for both county A & Premier teams – Qualified for the Nationals and England Trials on several occasions – won the National Fours Championship and the British Isles Fours Championship in 2003 – played for England for the following season. Ambition: My only aspiration now is to continue playing as long as my health lets me. Outside interests: Away from Bowls my main interest lies with wood-turning and making stuff in my workshop.
Name: BEN HAULKHAM – Club: The Martlets SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Aces. Year started Bowling: 1994. Favourite Discipline: Singles and Pairs as my game has adapted to these more in recent years. Influenced by: Terry Payne and Malcolm Rollings in my early years, Keith Hawkins and Marc Lancaster later on. All fantastic players who enjoyed success. Achievements: County Singles Champion; County Pairs Champion x 2; County Triples Champion x 2; County Fours Champion x 2. Ambition: As you’d expect, to win a National Championship after a few close attempts. I feel my game is stronger than ever right now, and am good enough to do it! Outside interests: Working as a busy lawyer, watching football and spending quality time with family and friends.
Name: ROGER HAWKE (Sir) – Clubs: Cowfold SMBC. Bowls Used: Henselite Super Grip size 2. Year started Bowling: 2005 having retired from playing Cricket! Favourite Discipline: Aussie Pairs! Influenced by: I have picked up little tips from many bowlers I have played with, and against through the years. My first influence was the late Ron Reynolds. Watching players like Chris Page & and other Premier, and County players you learn a lot – the trick is executing what you have learnt! Achievements: House Singles: 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015, & 2019. Pairs: 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2019. Triples: 2009, 2013. Ambition: To be in a team that beats Hampshire! Outside interests: Singing Open Mic & Karaoke Pop Music (I have my own set-up, amp mics 8000+ songs!), following Leicester FC. Being retired I do a lot of “quality control” visiting local food and drinking hostelries (including my Sister’s in Spain).

Name: STEVE JEFFERY – Club: Infinity SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Vector. Year Started Bowling: About 2010. Favourite Discipline: Probably have to say singles as you have no one else to blame, but failing that anything as long as it gets the brain going. Influenced by: There’s not many sports they can beat me at, so would have to say my boys. If I could take some part of each of their games and combine them into one then I’d be very happy. Achievements: Have to say the main one is getting to the semi-final of national triples in 2019 and losing to one hell of a wick. Qualifying for all 4 disciplines is also up there despite not playing in the fours in 2017. Ambition: Have to be win a national title. Outside interests: Thankfully my hobby is also my job. Love plants and gardening. Holidays in this country. Even weekends away. There’s so much to see. Members of National Trust and English Heritage so that helps.

Influenced by: Brian & Bill in Cornwall, then since I have been in West Sussex, Dan, Chris, Charlie and Richard for playing and Robin for enthusiasm. I am lucky to play with such great people. Achievements: Cornwall Ladies Club Singles. Club Triples, West Sussex Over 60’s Pairs, County 4’s, Mixed 4’s, Over60’s Triples, County Triples, Captains Cup. Ambition: To be as good as I can. Outside interests: Family and Walking.

Influenced by: My Dad (Eric West) was an early County Singles Champion. Ernie Smithers, Malcolm Rollings and Alan Morris were next level bowlers and role-models. Players like Chris Rolph, Chris Blackman and Mel Lillywhite continue to influence. Achievements: Fittleworth Pairs, Bury Singles x4, Foxes Singles x3, Martlets Singles x2, County C of C’s x4, County Singles x1, County Pairs x4 County Triples x5, County Fours x7, National Triples 2004. Ambition: To win the next game I play! Outside interests: Music: I’m a massive Beatles fan!
Name: MEL LILLYWHITE (Lilly) – Club: Lavant SMBC, The Martlets SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Ace. Year Started Bowling: 1996. Favourite Discipline: Fours. Influenced by: My parents were both very good in their respective sports, Dad had a chance to play professional football and Mum was rumoured to be one of the finest stoolball players around when I was growing up, they tried to teach me how to lose as well as win. Also, Marc Lancaster and Kyle McGowan who proved that team play is massive part of bowls on and off the mat/green. Achievements: Club Singles at Lavant & Martlets, County Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours some more than once. I don’t keep count. Ambition: Eliminate mistakes and try and help others do the same. Outside interests: Travel, Clay shooting and I’m a massive petrol head.
Name: MARTIN LOCKE – Club: Horley BC. Bowls Used: Thomas Taylor 2H. Year Started Bowling: 1998. Favourite Discipline: Triples. Influenced by: Mr “Bomber”. Achievements: First Singles Comp won at Horley. Ambition: Helping more people enjoy short. Outside interests: Family
Name: DAVID LUXFORD – Club: The Martlets. Bowls Used: Taylor Ace and Vector VS. Year started Bowling: 2013. Favourite Discipline: Definitely Singles. Influenced by: A lovely man called Reg Hickman got me involved in bowls at Wisborough initially. I had no idea short mat existed until then, but have since embraced all forms of the game. More recently Marc Lancaster, Malcolm Rollings and Robin Armstrong amongst others, have inspired me to aspire to greater things, just wish I’d found the game earlier. Achievements: Numerous trophies at Wisborough Green, including 3 Singles titles, plus 2 Pairs and 1 Mixed Fours trophy at Warman Leisure Tournaments. Various Trophies at Fittleworth too, but so far just the Captains ‘A Team’ Cup and a Plate win at County level. Ambition: Still striving for that little bit of extra consistency to get to the next level. But would love to win a County competition, then maybe who knows National honours. Outside interests: Family, especially the Great Grandchildren, music, horse and dog racing are also close to my heart.
Ambition:Would like to win a national title after being to the semi finals and quarter finals on a number of occasions!

Name: PETER PLASSING – Club: Formely Upper Beeding. Bowls Used: Taylor aces size 4. Year Started Bowling: 2010. Favourite Discipline: Self-discipline. When I am in perfect control of myself, I can succeed. Where there is doubt, I will fail. I don’t have a favourite mode of game. I prefer to be adaptable. Influenced by: There are many players who’s talent and achievements. I respect and admire, but because my thinking is different to most, I find it difficult to be influenced by others when it contravenes my judgement. Everyone has their own style and strategies which work for them and mixing them up just clouds my own. This is probably why I will never be one of the greats. Achievements: Won a couple of competitions but the most memorable games did not come with trophies, but from when I excelled with success and when I excelled at failure. I also remember the games where that magical rhythm when all the players in my team are in unison. Ambition: I don’t really have an ambition. They are for the young who have plenty of time to chase them. In the words of Rudyard Kipling “… If you can dream and not make dreams your master … “. I like to win, if that is an ambition but ambition as a goal is too time consuming. Outside interests: As a Designer the Analysis of accepted practice and expanding practical talents and skills is inherent in me. With an overwhelming desire to be self-reliant, there are far too many interesting challenges to accomplish in one lifetime to ever get bored.
Name: CHARLOTTE ROLLINGS – Club: Infinity SMBC. Bowls Used: Good old lignoids!! Year Started Bowling: Erm not 100% sure but around same time as my brother so 2000/2001. Favourite Discipline: I would probably say pairs or triples! I’ve enjoyed playing in both these disciplines for the county. Influenced by: Well first of all it has to be my dad (Malcolm Rollings) as he was the one that got me playing and has taught me a lot even if he doesn’t think so. Still to this day everytime I get on the mat all I want to do is to make him proud of what a bowler I have become!! So many others have helped me improve my game, the likes of my brother Jack, Chris Page, Richard, Bomber, Robin in different ways whether that is playing with them/against or just watching on the sidelines. Achievements: Many mixed pairs titles; County fours; County triples; Aussie Pairs; Charity fours. Ambition: The main one has to be a National Titles but feel I am little way off that one just yet. I have decided that I would like to give the England Ladies team a go and improve my game even further. Outside interests: Speedway, cross-stitching (tend to find me doing on the sidelines of games). Getting out for walks in the countryside.
Name: JACK ROLLINGS – Club: Infinity SMBC. Bowls Used: Taylor Ace Year Started Bowling: Early 2000’s maybe 2001. Favourite Discipline: Singles or pairs. Singles allows you to play your own game and believe in your own game but having that team mate to make your life easy is always handy! Influenced by: More than just one. My dad Malcolm Rollings taught me most of what I know and introduced me to the game. whilst growing up always looked up to Marc Lancaster, Mel Lillywhite and Peter Whale, some county legends that I’ve always seen as ones to be able to beat. Nowadays Robin Armstrong for his shear passion for the sport and how he’s trying to drive everyone in our county to be better and for the game to get better. Achievements: Martlets Club singles 11/12-15/16 Infinity club singles 16/17 Champion of champions 16/17- 18/19 County singles 17/18-18/19 County pairs 14/15-16/17 County triples 17/18 County fours 11/12 12/13 18/19 Ambition: National title has got to be the highest thing on the list that I feel in capable of achieving.. same so close a few years ago with making the final in the fours, being able to make that next step will be mega! Outside interests: Bit of a petrol head anything with four wheels and a engine will keep me interested! (This fellow uses the exclamation mark as much as the Webmaster!!!).
Name: ELAINE SADLER – Club: Crablands, Selsey. Bowls Used: Taylor Vector Vs, size 00. Year Started Bowling: 2011. Favourite Discipline: Singles or pairs. Most disliked Fours – too much time in between bowls! Influenced by: Fellow Club-mate Mollie Back who introduced me to SM and SM County. Also watching and playing against other players in County competitions, particularly Robin Armstrong who is particularly encouraging. Achievements: Winner of many Club comps, in Green bowls most recent Ladies 2-wood Champion & in SM, most recent successes, winner of Ladies Pairs & Australian Pairs. Ambition: On the playing side, having recently played against the England Ladies I would love to play along side them. On the Coaching side, previously I coached many years in basketball, so in 2017 I attained my BDA Level 1 Bowls Award & I’m now eager to attain my Level 2 award. Coaching is a real passion for me with an added benefit that, if for health reasons I cannot play, I can still be involved in bowls by coaching. It’s so fulfilling to see new players you have taught playing shots you can’t do yourself! Outside interests: Quite difficult as much of my time is taken with playing, coaching & organising bowls and Club events. When time permits I enjoy cycling, playing Jonola (a form of Canasta), board games, caravanning with friends & holidaying with my family. In recent weeks much of my time has been on jigsaws – I’m averaging 1 thousand piece a week!

Achievements: National Qualifiers Mixed Fours 2nd Round at Solihull 2020, House Triples 2019, House Pairs Runners-up 2016 & 2019, House Singles Runner-up 2015, Winner 2016 & 2018. Represented West Sussex over 60 s against Surrey Kent and East Sussex. Ambition: Hope to play bowls as long as possible. Outside interests: Interested in wildlife gardening and photography. Influenced by: Robin Armstrong introduced me to the competitive side of the game. He has always been encouraging and supportive to everyone. Achievements: Club Pairs, Triples, County Triples Plate, 4’s Runners-up, O/60’s Triples, National O/55’s Pairs ¼ Finalist, Representing West Sussex County. On a separate note I have qualified last 16 at Leamington Spa Outside National Pairs 2018, 2019. Ambition: To win a top-level Competition for myself and for my County. Outside Interests: Football, Motor Racing, Snooker and Outdoor Bowls.

Influenced by: It took him a few years to get me playing, but Robin Armstrong with his encouragement and enthusiasm has helped my game, even keeping me pursuing it through injuries when I could have possibly given up. Achievements: 2 Wood Singles (2), Pairs (3), Triples, Mixed Pairs, Consolation Cup, County 4’s RU (2), Plates, & Being selected to represent the County. Ambition: I aim to pursue short mat all year round, I hope to restore my ability and consistency to my game from when I first took it up, and to progress further in County comps, Nationals, with added Opens and even Players tour. Outside interests: Work for myself so a lot time is used up there, in between that is, TV Football, Long walks with the dog and The pub.

Influenced by: Peter Whale a superb bowler to watch and be in the same team as, who always encourages and shows great sportsmanship. Achievements: Playing for England Ladies; being in the A team when we won the County Championships; winning the County Pairs & County Fours, and runner up to Keith Hawkins in the Champion of Champions. Club Singles Winner 5 times. Junior Bowls coach for 16 years which produced a National Champion and a team that won the Inter-County Junior Woodbridge Trophy. Ambition: To play in the over 60s pairs with Peter Whale when I am old enough! Outside interests: Playing football with Crawley Old Girls. Mentoring young people. Time with family especially our grandson.
